Skincare routines get all the attention, but dermatologists say one daily habit undoes the benefits of even the most expensive serums: showers that are too hot for too long.
The Hidden Damage
"Hot water strips the skin's natural lipid barrier faster than people realize," one dermatologist explains. Over time, this can lead to increased sensitivity, redness, and a weakened moisture barrier — even in people with otherwise solid routines.
Signs your shower habit may be the culprit:
- Skin feels tight within minutes of stepping out
- Increased redness or flushing after bathing
- Moisturizer seems to "sit" on top instead of absorbing
The Simple Fix
Experts recommend keeping showers under 10 minutes and finishing with lukewarm rather than hot water. Applying moisturizer within three minutes of stepping out — while skin is still damp — reportedly locks in far more hydration than applying it later.
Why It's Being Missed
"People spend hundreds on serums but won't turn the dial two degrees cooler," one skin specialist noted, calling it one of the most common blind spots she sees in clients with otherwise excellent skincare habits.
