Do Eye Creams Actually Work? What Dermatologists Say

Eye creams command significant price premiums based on claims of specialized formulation. The dermatological consensus on whether the premium is justified is more nuanced than either the marketing or the skepticism suggests.

Do Eye Creams Actually Work? What Dermatologists Say

Eye creams are among the most aggressively marketed skincare products and among the most questioned by dermatologists. The debate about whether they provide benefits beyond well-formulated moisturizers applied to the same area has been ongoing for decades without clean resolution.

The Case for Eye Creams

The eye area has specific characteristics that distinguish it from the rest of the facial skin. The skin under the eye is the thinnest on the face, approximately 0.5mm compared to 2mm elsewhere, making it the first area to show fine lines, dryness, and the effects of inadequate sleep or hydration. This thinness also makes it potentially more sensitive to active ingredients at concentrations appropriate for elsewhere on the face.

Manufacturers argue that eye creams are formulated to be safe for application this close to the eye and that their active concentrations are calibrated for the area's sensitivity. Well-formulated eye creams also address specific concerns of the eye area: caffeine for de-puffing, peptides for fine lines, retinol at lower concentrations than body formulas, and hydrating ingredients that prevent the tightness that contributes to expression lines.

The Counter-Argument

Several dermatologists have noted that a well-formulated facial moisturizer applied carefully around the eye provides equivalent benefit to the majority of eye creams, which often contain very similar ingredients to face moisturizers at much higher prices. Gel formulas that do not melt with body heat are the main category where eye-specific formulation provides a practical advantage.

The most honest conclusion: for those already using a well-formulated, gently hydrating face moisturizer, a separate eye cream may add little. For those whose face moisturizer contains actives that are too strong for the eye area, an eye-specific formula provides a genuine solution.
