Korean beauty brands adopted and reformulated it in the 1980s as an all-in-one product combining moisturizer, primer, foundation, and sun protection. The Western versions launched around 2012 were significantly lighter formulations than the original Korean products.
The primary function of BB cream is coverage, with skincare benefits secondary. Most formulations provide light to medium coverage alongside SPF and some skin-conditioning ingredients.
What CC Cream Actually Is
CC cream, or color correcting cream, was developed as an evolution of the BB cream concept with a stronger skincare focus. The formulations typically contain more active ingredients targeting specific concerns: brightening agents for dullness, anti-inflammatory ingredients for redness, or antioxidants for environmental protection. Coverage is usually lighter than BB cream, with the emphasis on skin tone correction rather than coverage.
The practical distinction for most users: BB cream if the primary desire is light coverage with a skincare formula, CC cream if the skin already has good texture and the goal is evening tone and adding active ingredients. Both provide less coverage than a traditional foundation, making them most appropriate for skin in good condition or for use on no-makeup days.
