The vegan leather market has grown enormously, and the quality range has grown with it. These are the materials genuinely worth investing in and those to avoid.

Leather Alternatives in Fashion: What Is Actually Worth Buying

The term vegan leather encompasses everything from the disposable-feeling PVC of mass-market fast fashion to genuinely innovative materials made from apple peels, cactus fiber, mycelium, and Pineapple waste. The market has developed enough for meaningful distinctions to be made between materials worth investing in and those that will crack and peel within a season.

Materials Worth Investing In

Piñatex, made from pineapple leaf fibers, is among the most developed and tested plant-based leather alternatives. Used by brands including H&M and Hugo Boss, it has demonstrated durability over several seasons and a texture that takes dye and embossing processes well. It does not match animal leather's aging characteristics, but it performs significantly better than polyurethane alternatives.

Mylo from Bolt Threads, made from mycelium, the root structure of fungi, has shown exceptional promise in limited releases from Stella McCartney and Hermès. It is not widely available but represents the most technically impressive plant-based leather alternative in development.

Materials to Approach Carefully

Most mass-market vegan leather products are polyurethane coated fabric, often called PU leather. The quality range is enormous. High-quality PU leather uses thicker base fabric and higher polyurethane concentrations that resist cracking. Low-quality versions begin cracking and peeling within months of regular use, making them a worse sustainability choice than well-chosen animal leather despite the marketing.

For durability and environmental impact, second-hand animal leather frequently outperforms new synthetic alternatives. A good-quality vintage leather bag generates no new material impact and will outlast most new vegan leather alternatives by decades.
